another update!

I'm out of control!

Actually, I just rediscovered this video I accidentally took in the summer.  I didn't realize I had the camera on video, but somehow managed to take what I think is a pretty amusing minute or so of video.

More from the vault.

Nicholas skiing day 1

Pizza Pizza Pizza!!!!!  (translates to STOP STOP STOP!!!)

Tobin reading to Nick.  He's only read this book a few times, but has it memorized to the word!  I love the fidgety feet.

skiing

Went skiing today with the boys.  Nick and I got out for a few laps last week, and today we all made it up.  Nick has been TOTALLY amped about skiing ever since the first snow fell on the mountains in September.  Last weekend he insisted on walking from the truck carrying his skis.  Which is no small feat for someone who is barely 3' tall.  Today they both ripped it up on the magic carpet with Coen.

There is no question Nicholas is a skier.  He's determined to ski on his own, climb on and off the magic carpet by himself as well as take his skis on and off alone.  He's also trying SO hard to snowplow, but I think his little legs aren't quite strong enough yet to force his skis apart.

Tobin has improved vastly over last year and will be skiing on his own before the end of the month.  He's still a little shakey on his new skis, but like everything he does, he'll one day decide it's time to show these suckers how to ski and probably bust out a 360 or something.

Bring it.

Exhausted and irrational on the way home.  Didn't want to take his boots, helmet googles or shark mitts off.  Clutching Diego like his life depended on it.

Patio Boats

There is little else in the world that Tobin and Nick love more than patio boats.  Here Tobin gives us a tour of his latest patio boat.  Meanwhile, Nick is talking to Ann-Marie on the phone.

Trug or Trating

The Halloween tide came and went, leaving about 50lbs of candy washed up on the counter.  I've been trying to moderate the kids intake, but I really should be trying to moderate my own intake...

Heeeeeyaaaaa Candy Mules!

Posing with their pumpkins.

Tobin is a turtle and Nick is a dragon.

Nick's costume was a little cumbersome for him.  He couldn't see very well with the dragon's overhanging snout, plus he had big dragon feet and hands on, limiting his dexterity.  Consequently he would be a bit behind on getting to the door.  Inevitably Tobin would get to the door first, knock and politely say: "Trick or treat".

Nick would be about 10 seconds behind, stagger up the steps on his hands and knees, ending up on the wrong side of the screen door.  He'd then have to navigate back around the screen door at the top of the steps to the correct side.  Eventually he would get to the door, and if it hadn't been opened yet he would pound on it with his fist and yell " TRUG OR TRATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

TRUG OR TRATE-ing

a posting of poached pics

Still waiting on a used charger so we can take photos again...  In the meantime, here are a few from this weekend, from Nana

The boys at Nana and Poppa Paul's while I got out for a good long bike ride

Hmmmm, is this where they spent the day?

an update!

Haha, just kidding.  Actually there's nothing I'd like to do more than write a post and put up some fantastic pictures of the past two months.  We had a great holiday, put a nice floor in our new house, Ann-Marie started her three months of clinical work in Prince George... But we've lost the charger for our camera and I can't bear to put anyone through a six paragraph description of the caboose we stayed in on Active  pass.  So thusly, you'll have to wait til we find the charger so we can take some pictures to put on the blog.  Stay tuned, we haven't abandoned ship!

Moooooved

The beagle has landed. We have a roof over our heads now, but not really a floor under our feet. We bought a house on 8th st* and have moved in, but are currently camping out in the basement while flooring is sorted out.

It's a bit of a transition leaving our lot in the Big Ed to being downtown with neighbours on either side in front and in back. But we're settling in.

We spent a few (? - can't remember now!) weeks house sitting here and there, but spent most of our time at Mardi and Darrell's in Arrow Heights. It was here that I had an epiphany and concluded that, no, we do not belong in Arrow Heights. Not so much because it isn't a nice place, because it was awesome up there. More it was the social shockwave of going from the Big Eddy and transcending the socio-economic ladder right to upper middle class. It was akin to social sublimation going from semi-rural-ghetto --> nice houses, mowed lawns and dogs on leashes.

What brought me to this conclusion you ask? We'll it's hard to say, but it might have been:

A) The dog running out and barking at every person that walked by, and humping any dog that came within 100m of him.

B) Yard quickly becoming overwhelmed with broken and misplaced things (underwear, toys, garden equipment)

C) Feral children wandering down the road at 8 o'clock in the morning moaning "daaaaddddyyyy!" while I was walking the dog.

D) Turd eating dog.

Yes, Big Eddy Brothers and Sisters, we're breaking new ground here! We're on the outside now and, let me tell you, it's scary. All these new and strange customs (where are the couches on the lawn? There are no broken down cars here? What happened to Ricky, Julian and Bubbles?), but we're coping. We'll miss Clean Frank and Glen and their collection of garbage bags and dishwashers on the lawn. Clarence, I'll miss your murderous gaze as you drove slowly by; Sam, how will we predict water outages if we don't see your excavator working?

Luckily for us, we have neighbours who have expertly distilled all things Big Eddy down into a 50x100' lot. Right next door. Things like
A) Cars all over the yard (which double as bedrooms, evidently)
B) Vicious dogs
C) Public wasted-ness (not just drunkeness)
D) Cooking over a campfire a la cavemen**

* we're slowly buying up all the houses on 8th st and will soon build a perimeter fence with razor wire so we can start our own religion.
** lotta squirrels around here, but fewer every day... Makes a guy wonder what they're eating over there.

Christina Lake!

Tobin just let a big one rip here. It's amazing (and hilarious) that 4 year old's can fart like full sized adults.

Mmmmm, there's nothing more delicious than a hot dog roasted over a fire. On a sandy beach.

Not so jazzed on sandy hot dogs.

One of our only family photos. As coordinated as it will ever get! And, no, my hairline is not thinning as it appears to be in this picture. Just for the record.

One thrilled. One terrified.

Moving....somewhere!

Yes, sold the house, now we're bank account rich and home poor. Haven't decided on what to do next, but maybe after the weekend we'll have a clearer idea!

I'm not sure how I feel about moving, it's been a good house to us and we'll miss it, and the yard. It's the house we were married at, brought the kids home to... But onwards to a new adventure! No sense looking back now.

Solstice Bike Ride

I had it in my mind this year that I wanted to see how far I could ride my bike on the solstice. Originally I was hoping to choose a direction, leave at dawn and ride until I fell in a heap in the ditch, spending the night cramping under a space blanket covered in my own saliva.

Alas, common sense prevailed in the form of Ann-Marie (not usually a bastion of common sense when it comes to athletic pursuits I have to say...) and she suggested I ride to Mica and back. Sensing the lack of epic I wasn't so hot on this idea, but in the end it proved quite epic enough.

I left town at 6:30 with John, who joined me for the first 70km which was a lifesaver as that made the first (and hilliest) 3 hours go by quickly! He turned around at Downie loop and gave me his jacket which totally saved my bacon when it rained for the next 6 hours...

After a lot of ups and downs, some verbal abuse towards the heavens, and a couple of amusing bear encounters (you can really sneak up on them and scare the hell out of them on a bike!) I finally got to the CMH Monashee lodge at about 1:00 and poached a dryer, not so much to dry my clothes as just warm them up a bit. I spent about 45 minutes here drinking hot water, procrastinating and waiting to see if it would stop raining. It didn't.

Heading south in the pouring rain I fought with a headwind for about 3 hours, cursing and eating chocolate covered coffee beans like they were peanuts. Around this time I subconsciously started trying to remove the bag of nails I felt like someone had replaced my seat with. On the way back I struggled to go faster than 20km/h. Whenever I felt like I was getting into a groove I would hit a hill and grind back down to 11km/h. It was pretty demoralizing. Eventually I just stopped worrying about how fast I was going and plodded along.

The hardest part of this ride is the first 50km from town, the hills are relentless and some of them are STEEP! I was getting pretty pooped at km 240 and had to start switchbacking up some of the bigger hills! Here, I did a bit more cursing, this time at the road engineers who built this horrendous section. Once I got to the top of the dam I let out a whoop and pretty much coasted in to town. One lap around the greenbelt took me up to 288km and I was home just as it was getting dark. So 14.5 hours on the road (minus a bit of time futzing around CMH) and 288km. I felt great when I got home, but I deteriorated after about 45 minutes and pretty much slithered into bed...

Ann-Marie and the boys were so great, they came out and brought me food and water and visited. Tobin gave me his father's day present out there and we all had a little picnic and read a story on the side of the road. So in the end doing an out-and-back was the best way as it turned my solo suffer mission into a family event, which really made it that much more *fun*.

I'm not sure I'll do this again, but I'm sure one could ride much further in the same period of time, choosing a flatter route and having a group to ride with would make 400km pretty attainable. Maybe next year....

Moving...

I don't suggest it.

In case anyone is wondering why we haven't returned phone calls or emails... We sold the house a week and a half ago, had a house we were going to buy, but upon inspection we decided it was too much work to take on. Thus, we're now homeless and have two weeks to pack up, move out and find somewhere to live!

No nervous breakdowns yet, but I'm sure we're going down that path.

Happy Birthday to Nick!

Nick turned two on the 14th. We kept it pretty low key as mom is away this week so we're all a bit sad about that. Saturday or Sunday will be party day as we'll all be together again!
Here are a couple of pictures of him with his Lego-man headlamp. He was SO jazzed about this when he opened it. Even going to bed he wanted to wear it and was lying there in the dark lighting up the bunk bed... eventually he let me turn it off and take it off, but he wanted to have it on his pillow beside him. Tonight he wanted it tucked in under a sock on his side table.

light, light shining bright

*that's a pancake, not a giant piece of ham on his plate. However, with mom being away this week we did eat a lot of brown food.

Tequila, the miracle drug

Before tequila...

after tequila***...

Ann-Marie is in Prince George this week at school so I'm pulling double duty with the dudes. On top of some single parenting, I'm trying to close a deal on our house, and close a deal on another house we want to buy, mortgages, house inspections, negotiations... It's the craziest week of my life!!

***I should clarify that it was I who consumed the tequila, not them.

Scenery

North face of Bonney, Ann-Marie did a traverse last weekend that goes behind this beauty.

Swanzy and Bonney and Parsons in the distance. She skied off the shoulder of Parsons on the traverse. At the bottom of this photo you can see the army of skiers about to pound the track we just put in to the Dome. Count them. There's 14.

Swanzy and another tiny group of skiers. What a beauty, many ambitious ski lines off here. The beginning of the Bonney traverse ascends the south slopes of this peak.
